Buy 100 Get 1 Free? That's Good Is It?

Grr. How annoying to be queueing in any store when there is only one till open and staff members standing around twiddling their thumbs.

I think it's brilliant that we have a Co-op on our doorstep, with wide ranging products, fresh bread, milk, deli, the lot. I'm truly grateful it's there, I wouldn't want it any other way. And that's not to mention the convenience of a post office and dispensing chemist directly attached!

But some things about it just really test my patience. Every time I go there:

"Do you have a Dividend Ca-" "No thank you"

"Do you want a Dividend Ca-" "No thank you!"

Seriously, who in their right mind thinks that a 1% cash back card, equivalent to a BUY ONE HUNDRED, GET ONE FREE! promotion, is worth the time and effort to sign up, carry round yet another bit of plastic, and have Big Brother watching your every purchase?

Because at the end of the day, that's all loyalty cards are for. Not for us, the customer, but for the stores that employ them, to try to make you come back over and over again while "fingerprinting" you and your habits and then directly target marketing at you. Or maybe worse. But let's not go there.

So, good staff of the Co-op, unless I'm standing there at the checkout, grinning like a mindless zombie with dividend card already in hand, please stop asking me if I have or want a dividend card!
